Use of Sunbeds Before the Age of 35
A really great article was published last week on the Association of Health Care Journalists website. Dr. Ivan Oransky talks about what the WHO's report that the “use of sunbeds before the age of 35 is associated with a 75% increase in the risk of melanoma” really means.
The truth is, the WHO report found that less than three-tenths of 1 percent of indoor tanners develop melanoma. The report also found that less than two-tenths of 1 percent of non-tanners develop melanoma, but they spin the story by announcing the relative risk, not the absolute risk. As the article states, this is a common practice in the medical community, especially when they're lobbying to ban something.
