Club Sun Tanning Salons Raise Money For Vitamin D & Breast Cancer Research
August 2008
Club Sun Tanning Salons are pleased to announce that they, along with MR International, have raised over $5,000 for breast cancer research as it relates to ultra violet light.
The salons raised money and awareness by selling “Think Pink” moisturizers this past spring. Club Sun also joined forces with indoor tanning salons around the nation to participate in the Smart Tan campaign called D-Feat Breast Cancer, where tanners were asked to donate $1 to $5 for Smart Tan Vitamin D markers and bracelets. “We appreciate our customers’ enthusiasm in helping us support a great cause,” said Julie G. Howell, owner of Club Sun Tanning Salons.
Research has already shown that vitamin D deficiency is strongly linked to an elevated risk of breast cancer, the primary cause of cancer death in North American women. In 2006, the Anticancer Research established that women with higher levels of vitamin D are fifty to seventy percent less likely to develop breast cancer. In a 2008 Canadian study, research showed that women who were deficient in vitamin D doubled their chances of having their cancer recur and seventy-three percent were more likely to die.
Club Sun Tanning Salons and MR International will award the $5,000 to Matt Russell of the Vitamin D Foundation at the company’s annual Manager Retreat this month, where he is a featured speaker.
“I think this is an excellent effort on behalf of all our salons,” said Howell. “I am very excited to see that the benefits of UV light and the positive bodily functions they affect are getting the much earned attention they deserve via proven scientific research.”
